Flood Pants
The truck is still not 100%, but I've decided not to think about it anymore. So let's move on to more pressing things...like 300 more inches of snow that's soon to be melting and that has to go somewhere.
I'm not going to have the numbers exactly right, so my AccuWeather pals will probably want to correct me, but the area we're in right now got about 300 more inches of snow this year than they're used to getting. It's been really cold up until recently too, so that means all that snow hasn't had to go anywhere yet. But now that the temps are starting to rise, and rise far, it's starting to be of concern to us here in the Hole. That water is going to be coming down the mountain soon, and the rivers are already running near capacity. We had a group training the other day, and the Superintendent of the park scared us all a bit with her talk of flood plans and flood meetings and basically telling us our warehouse and even the Visitor Center may be swimming pools soon. They expect the worst to come around June 20th. Now it's a wait-and-see kind of situation. I guess the higher ups in our organization are having a meeting today to discuss what we would have to do if flooding is a certainty. It will mean boxing up the warehouse and the bookstore and trying to get all that merchandise to higher ground. If our store does flood, the Visitor Center will most likely remain closed for the remainder of the season. I did say last week that things happen for a reason, right? Hmmmmm.
Phil and I have been taking walks to the river in our campground to check levels and see what's what. It didn't look too bad the other day, but this morning we could already tell there's been a rise in the water level. Plus we have whitecaps on the water. That's never good.

We did get to see some evidence of beaver activity in that area, and we thought that was pretty cool. We didn't see any beavers, though. Our conclusion is that they got washed away downstream somewhere.

And I think I finally got to see an owl (I'm not sure...if you recognize the feathers, please leave a comment), although I was hoping for a bit of a different viewing.

That's all for this week. We're spending our days off this week raising the hems on our pants so we'll be prepared for the coming weeks. Keep your fingers crossed for us, and hope that all that water finds a non-destructive path.
