How It Is
The past few weeks have been pretty quiet around here. We have fallen into the common routine of work and weekend. In Skagway, we are lucky to be able to know roughly how many people to expect in the store each day based on how many ships are due in.
Ship at dock:
Monday through Thursday are our busiest days with Wednesday topping out at more than 10,000 people in off the ships. But we are fortunate in that most of those visitors are gone by seven and the town returns to normal. This give us time to go out with friends or just visit the point and watch the sunset (or as close as it comes around here).
Sunset at the point:
One night after work we came across a teenager who must have been RVing with his family. He asked what there was to do at night for kids his age. The unfortunate truth is, not much. Nightlife in this town consists of several restaurants and a handfull of bars. No movie theaters, no arcades, and practically no shopping after seven. The closest we come to a Barnes & Noble is the public library that stays open until nine. But no one ever said Skagway was a party place.
Speaking of parties, we celebrated Xander's "birthday" yesterday. Last year we did a mad dash from Yellowstone to Albuquerque to adopt him. Since then this little puppy, who was called "Diablo" because he was so devilish, has become a big part of the family. Since no one had any idea when his real birthday was, we made it August 9. We stole the idea of a ground beef cake with a fried egg for icing from Sue's sister and it was a big hit with both dogs.
Birthday Meat Cake
Mmmmm….meat cake
We also re-learned that giving people food to dogs is not a good idea as Xander had gastrointestinal distress the next day that made him leave a few squishy presents for us. Nothing like sharing the love.
